TMHS 048: You Can’t Touch This! The Benefits Of Massage Outweigh Medication

In this episode of The Model Health Show we’re looking at the many benefits of massage therapy. Massage has been clinically proven to help reduce depression and anxiety, improve hormone function, and boost the immune system. There are very few treatments that have such a wide array of benefits, and the history of massage itself may surprise you.

Massage therapy is documented in some of the most storied ancient traditions (which you’ll learn about today). Yet, even though it has a rich history, and it’s clinically proven to be effective, massage has it fallen out of practice in modern medicine. Today you’re going to understand why, and how massage is making a huge comeback in treatment for health and wellness.

There are many forms and “styles” of massage to choose from. I’ve personally experienced deep tissue massage, Thai massage, reflexology, sports massage, Swedish massage, and even massage derived from Ayurveda. They all have unique aspects, but they all provide tremendous value when administered by a trained massage therapist.

    Your shows are always full of great information, and while I’ve only been a listener for a few weeks now, the encouragement in these podcasts have already become a major help in my health journey.

    Too many people misunderstand the importance and variety of massage.
    The right licensed massage therapist (LMT) can change your life! I probably would not be able to walk today if not for mine.

    And don’t be discouraged if the first one you go to isn’t the right one. After my first LMT moved away, it took 2 years to find one who had the right touch for me, but it was worth the search. She’s been my LMT for 14+ years, and beyond all the physical deep tissue & trigger point work, she is healing for my heart.

      Beth I’m so glad you brought up the point about connecting with a massage therapist that is right for YOU. I feel the same way for sure. Though I’ve had the opportunity to work many practitioners, there are only a couple that I keep going back to.

    This podcast truly came at the RIGHT TIME for me personally. I started massage therapy school this weekend!! So excited to step into that practitioner role I’ve envisioned for myself. Listening to this show at this particular time made my heart smile so big 🙂 THANK YOU Shawn as always.

    Man I herniated my L4 L5 discs as well Shawn. the best thing I did was rung a tennis ball on all the muscles connected to that area. No chiropractor needed. Too bad I figured this out 2 years after the injury, but at least i know now. 🙂

    I’m a Thai Bodywork practitioner, my ears popped up when you mentioned the technique and benefits. Thank you!! I’ve been a practitioner for over 6years and it’s still a challenge to get people to try this amazing healing therapy! I had one session on a fluke from a colleague, I was hooked, blown away with how I felt. Left for Chiang Mai, Thailand to get certified. Keep up the awesome work on this podcast, it’s always on my top priority list to learn and grow in my wellness career and personal life.

    Great show. I am a new listener and also a massage therapist, and loved your insight.
    Here in Australia, we can actually claim some of the cost back from the fee paid, if you are a member of a private health fund.

    After running through a ton of shows from newest to oldest when I’m driving, I finally got to this one about 2 weeks ago. I used to get massages every month 4 years back, and remembered how good that felt, and thought I needed to get a massage as it’s been 2 years since my last one. I finally had an opportunity yesterday to check out a place, and they happened to have a late opening for me to get in after work, so I booked it in the morning, and went it. I am no where near feeling completely tension free, but I feel a lot better this morning, and have already booked another appointment for 2 weeks out to focus on the upper back, where most of my problems exist.

    Thanks for pushing me to just book that appointment Shawn. I’ll make sure that a monthly massage works itself into the monthly budget.
