TMHS 118: Scary Dairy – The Pros And Cons Of Consuming Dairy Products

For a lot of us, nothing says love like some delicious milk and cookies.

Or maybe it’s ice cream that you just can’t do without? Or hard cheeses? Or yogurt? Or maybe you get really sexy and dip your food into fondue?

Whatever it may be that pulls on those heart strings for you, one thing is for certain: Dairy has a huge emotional connection with people in our world today.

This, my health seeking friend, is at the very center of the situation…

When it comes to dairy, a lot of people may be aware of the ill effects, but if you try to take it away they’ll cling on to that Ben & Jerry’s container like it’s the bonafide love of their life.

They’ll say, “I’ll follow your fancy nutrition advice Mr. Health Guy, but I’m not giving up my dairy!”

First of all, I’m not the guy that’s interested in taking things away from people. But if it’s causing you health problems like diabetes, high body fat, and allergies (you’re about to learn about all of that stuff in a minute) then maybe you might want to leave it alone for a while.

As I step back so that I don’t get stabbed with an ice cream scooper… I’m here to share why, in fact, dairy is so addictive and at the same time so harmful for most people.

Today we’re going to breakdown some long-believed myths about dairy in a way that’s going to blow your mind (and possibly stop you from blowing up bathrooms if you are lactose intolerant).

In all seriousness, what you’re about to learn today will be life-changing for you and the people you care about. It’s not that dairy is inherently “bad”, it’s just the way that it’s being produced and consumed today that can cause good people a lot of problems.

Enjoy the powerhouse content, but also stay tuned until the end to hear what alternatives to go with (dairy and dairy-free) that actually taste amazing. This is your body and your health, so take action to make it as great as possible!

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What enzymes are and what happens to them when they’re cooked.
  • The shocking number of illnesses that pasteurized dairy has been associated with.
  • What milk actually is (this is important!)
  • How important colostrum is to human health.
  • When humans first began domesticating animals for milk.
  • Why the milk our ancestors consumed is not remotely close to the milk we consume today.
  • What pasteurization is and how it was invented.
  • Why homogenization is used in commercial milk.

  • How neurological illnesses like schizophrenia are heavily linked to a certain type of dairy.
  • Why food is not really just food.
  • Why the dangers of dairy from sick animals can potentially be worse than the meat from sick animals.
  • How many people lose the ability to digest milk sugar as we age.
  • Why cheese is highly addictive (scientifically proven!)
  • How recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) impacts the health of cows.
  • How a bovine cancer epidemic led to a huge recall on beef.
  • What abnormal foods and drugs are given to conventional dairy cows.
  • The shocking way that cow’s milk impacts type 1 diabetes.
  • How molecular mimicry and autoimmune conditions can be caused by dairy.
  • Why calcium and dairy do NOT necessarily create strong bones.
  • Why raw milk might be better for those with asthma and allergies.
  • How consumption of milk can lead to accelerated weight gain.
  • Why dairy is actually a higher carbohydrate food.
  • What smart alternatives you can utilize instead of conventional dairy foods.

  1. Hi, thanks for sharing this with us. Can you tell me what kind of sources you use to support everything you share with us. Sometimes you call names from doctors,
but what kind of research do you use to draw the conclusions? Im just interessed in the people you work with, the people you trust and believe, and the research you use, because there is so much differtent information and research available.

Thanks a lot for sharing all the information!

  2. Hi Shawn,

Paleo diet works great for me. I cook Paleo meals for my family as well. The only thing remaining to eliminate in my 2- and 4-year-old daughters’ diet is 2 cups of milk a day (organic whole milk). I tried giving them coconut and almond milk. The 2-year-old was with either. The 4-year-old didn’t drink more than a sip.

Have you heard of any hacks as far as getting little ones off milk? Shall I just go with water? Increase green vegetable intake for calcium?

  3. Hi! Another great episode. I haven’t been a milk drinker since I was a child (lactose intolerance). As I’ve gotten more into health as I’ve gotten older, I’m so happy I was never really a dairy consumer! I’m commenting though to ask you about your thoughts on consuming raw dairy products to treat and prevent cavities/tooth decay. I have just a couple of small cavities that I’ve had for years that haven’t gotten worse for sometime but my dentist said he would like to fill them in. (A practice I really don’t agree with because I believe the body can heal itself and fillings are just masking the sypmtom!) So I heard about this book and picked up a copy (http://www.amazon.com/Cure-Tooth-Decay-Cavities-Nutrition/dp/0982021305). It recommends drinking raw milk to reverse cavities (as well as consuming other nutrient dense foods, i.e. fermented cod liver oil, lots of eggs-raw and cooked, liver, only eating soaking/fermented grains, etc) I added raw milk to my diet and because it contains the lactase enzyme naturally, I haven’t had any issues! Anyway, just curious about your thoughts on treating cavities through diet. I’ve read many testimonials and success stories of people following the protocol in the book. I’d be interested in your thoughts though, if any! Sorry for the rambling comment. 🙂

  4. Best show yet. I have been 95% dairy free since last Columbus Day (heart attack that morning at age 48). At 5′ 8″ and 155lbs as well as being a moderate runner, the one change I really needed was my diet. I eat oatmeal with blueberries and almond milk for breakfast almost every day and juice through the afternoon. It’s just easier to take with me for lunch at work. Dinner isn’t bad, but is sometimes a struggle.

I recovered well and have ran 500+ miles over the summer including several races. It dawned on me after this episode, my annual spring allergies never occurred. I haven’t had as much as a sniffle since I can’t remember when.

My 13 year old daughter has caught the running bug and participates in track and cross country. She can run all day, but when she pushes really hard her throat begins to clog with mucus. She spends her cross country races constantly clearing her throat yet finishes 6th out of 104… 23rd out of 258… etc.

It seems like every kid loves milk and mine is no different. We agree that going “dairy free” for her during this last half of the cross country season might be a good idea. Her regular doctor has already referred us to an allergist who can’t see her until the end of September.

    This just might be it!!

BTW, I have listened to every podcast and most several times over. You don’t need to write a book. You need a series of them.

  5. Hi Shawn, thanks for this episode, really good information. I’m almost dairy free except for cheese but after listening to this I’ll try to cut that out of my diet as well. Another goal would be to switch my son to almond milk, slowly 🙂

    Thank you!!!

  6. Hey Shawn!

    Love, love LOVE this show!

I just listened to this episode and you mentioned a recipe for dairy free cashew butter ice cream using an ice cream maker.

I wanted to share an even easier and lighter “ice cream” that your family and viewers may love.

For dairy free, I’ll take a frozen banana (sliced and frozen when it’s very ripe for enhanced sweetness), a few splashes of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, a little stevia (optional) and blend in the food processor until it has an ice cream consistency.

Some additions that make this very tasty are:
    Strawberries
    Pumpkin Puree
    Peanut Butter
    Chocolate Chips
    Nuts
    Graham Cracker Crust
    Cocoa Powder

My absolute favorite additions are 1 tsp cocoa powder, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, and 2 tsp peanut butter per banana for a banana “ice cream” that tastes like reese’s cup ice cream!

For a dairy option, I’ll blend 1 cup frozen fruit (peaches or berries) with 1 tablespoon honey, stevia (optional), 1/4 cup plain yogurt, and a tsp lemon juice in a food processor. This is a delicious, quick and healthy frozen yogurt.

Hope you enjoy these alternatives if you give them a try!

  7. Hi Shawn,

Another great podcast, thanks! Are you suggesting cutting out all dairy to really notice a difference? I switched to sheep and goat’s milk products as I heard they are better for our bodies but I haven’t felt any different.
    Thanks
    Alice

    1. Hey Alice, thanks so much for the love! Well, it depends on what results you’re going for. If you’re dealing with some nagging issues (acne, low energy, autoimmune/allergy stuff) then definitely pulling out the dairy full tilt for a few weeks would be a good idea to see how you feel, then reintroduce and tweak from there. If you’re already feeling great then simply keep doing what you’re doing. 😉
