THMS 091: Conquering Diabesity – Natural Solutions For Diabetes And The Obesity Epidemic

A new term has been coined to demonstrate the parallel line between diabetes and obesity. Diabesity is the realization that diabetes and obesity go together like peanut butter and jelly, like spaghetti and meatballs, or like Doritos and chili cheese dogs (if you grew up like I did).

The real underlying issue is that obesity and being dangerously overweight has become a societal norm. You will be shocked and a little disturbed when you find out what the statistics are today. But, more so, you’re going to be driven like never before to not have your name listed in the ranks of people who are stricken with diabesity.

This condition has become a societal norm because, as Dr. Francine Kaufman says, “Our ancient genes and our modern environment have collided.” You can not go more than a couple miles in this country and not see a chain of fast food restaurants, we are bombarded by chemicals in our food, water, and air supply, and we are more overworked and under-rested than at any other point in human history. What we are seeing now is a result of our collective decisions, but this can all change starting now.

Today you’re going to learn the ins and outs of how diabetes is created, how it’s reversed, and how to prevent it from happening in the first place. You’re also going to learn EXACTLY how body fat gets created in a way that you’ve never heard before. In particular, we’re going to focus on that especially troublesome fat that accumulates in the midsection, so that you can finally take control of the Battle of the Bulge.

Plus, a little bonus with today’s episode. To celebrate surpassing over 1 million downloads, I’m giving away several gift packs of Onnit foods and supplements. All you have to do to enter yourself is 1) Follow me on Instagram right here and 2) Tag me in a photo of where you’re listening to the show. I’ll be selecting a few winners all this week!

We’ve got so many powerful and exciting episodes coming up for you. It kicks off today with this masterclass on reversing diabetes, eradicating obesity, and taking back control of your health.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What diabesity is and where it originated.
  • What the symptoms of diabesity are (you can look down now and see if you have it!)
  • How the rates of diabetes have changed in the last 100+ years (this will shock you!)
  • What blood test you want to get when monitoring systemic inflammation and potential blood sugar problems.
  • How diabetes is actually created (the step-by-step process – this is powerful!)
  • What insulin really is and how it works.
  • The specific tissues that are most responsive to insulin (this can mean life or death…)

  • Why exercise can NEVER compete with your diet.
  • How you can use exercise to treat diabetes (it’s a compliment, not a cure!)

    SHAWN, THANK YOU!!
You have saved my life!!! I can never express in words how you have changed my life for the better. Since unknowingly discovering you on the Rawtarian website, I have been hooked on your website/podcasts. The information provided has enriched my spirit and changed my mindset which has led to implementation of positive daily habits for my routine. I’ve purchased your book “Sleep Smarter” on my kindle which was great and very informative! Also Onnit has received repeat orders due to trying Hemp Force, ShroomTech, triololgy butters and coconut oil. Will be ordering the Earth Green Nutrient and the Squatty Potty soon. Waiting for the arrival of my Magnesium Infusion and Oceans Alive supplements. I can feel the difference in my focus, exercise intensity and the lessening of my sugar cravings. I will no longer patronize GNC, Vitamin Shoppe and other stores. You have enlighten and touched me in ways that will have an everlasting impact. Also, can’t leave out Jade who is an asset and has a great voice. I’m blessed to have fate allow our paths to connect. I will always support and follow you…I’m a fan for life! Many blessings and much success. Annette

Awesome, Shawn. You are such a talented teacher. Not only did you break down Type 2 Diabetes in the clearest way I have ever heard but you also accomplished something very few people are able to do: talk about type 2 (and obesity) in a non-blaming, soul affirming way. I think your compassionate, respectful and research-driven delivery is the best way people who need to hear this information can allow it in and transformational change can truly happen. Thank you!

      I agree, Eileen.
It’s already easy enough for a person to internally bash themselves without the help of someone in a position of influence helping them.
I like the way Shawn explains the definition and action steps in an easy to absorb fashion.
He’s given me another way of explaining the concept to my clients and readers!

Shawn – great show and love your stuff! One thing you may want to caution listeners on with your recommendations around lower carbs is the impact this can have on your adrenals. I went low carb / high fat / high protein last fall and it was the tipping point for my adrenals to go haywire. I now have high cortisol issues at night and am dealing with insomnia. Your sleep book was very helpful, though I’ve been supplementing with something called “Seriphos” just before bed which has been a godsend. Since meeting with my ND, she has me eating a healthy carb with each meal to get my adrenals back in check. Love your show though and I’m definitely not trying to criticize…just a caution for those thinking of going low carb.

      Great insightful tip, Tim.
I had a client slip into adrenal fatigue which ultimately led to her damaging her central nerve (this is her physician’s explanation as I’m not familiar with the central nerve description). In all, adrenal dysfunction is really scary stuff that can backfire on you when not being observant when trying to get healthy.

I’ve been listening to your podcast during my stationary bike workouts, I heard you speak initially on another podcast and was so excited to find out you were diagnosed with degenerative spine disease at 20 years old. I had a work accident wherein I found out I also had deg. spine dx as well. I went the same route w doctor and meds, but also gained 40 pounds in the process due to concussion c-spine nerve injury and T-spine muscular injury. OMG you gave me the motivation to slowly get back to exercising carefully….And I can’t THANK YOU enough for the sugar addiction, wheat belly, hydration, supplements , green drinks, and other podcasts to tweek my way of eating, I’m doing the waist reduction workout you sent. I no longer use sugar, I was already Gluten-free (don’t eat goodies that GF….too high glycemic). Still have lots pain but I’m careful working out and using ALL your tips from your podcast, even listen to them twice if I don’t get all the info. So keep those podcast coming, I’m convinced your information is solidly based since I’m a Pharmacist and of course I check everything out!!!! So bravo!!! Keep them coming. Shalom Jean

Hey Shawn, in this episode (within first 20 minutes) you talk about what to test for in a blood panel, and you mention that you will talk about this in more detail on a future show. Can you please let me know which future show that is (assuming it’s taken place by now)? I’d like to hear more about that, please and thanks! 🙂
