We spend approximately 1/3 of our entire lives in a bedroom. That’s a long time to be anywhere

This is what makes your bedroom such a special place. And the environment in this room, whether you realize it or not, has a huge impact on your health and longevity.

How can a room actually dictate your health? To put it simply, humans are a direct product of their environment.

Our brains are constantly creating and strengthening neuro-associations to the places we are the most (i.e. your bedroom!). This helps to automate our behavior. So, basically your bedroom has you programmed like a robot. That’s right, you’re sort of like a robot. Not as cool as Terminator 2, but not as clunky as the robot from Short Circuit.

In all seriousness, your brain has evolved constantly looking for ways to automate things to free up mental energy. Your bedroom setup will inherently influence your behavior, and if great sleep is a behavior you want to take part in, then listen to this closely.

  1. I live your podcast, but I think it’s dangerous to make claims about the causes of autism, because the evidence is not definitive. There are lots of factors that may or may not cause autism behaviors. This statement is akin to stating that vaccinations cause autism, one study showed it and it has been continuously debunked, but millions of uneducated people now believe it. Be careful with claims like this.

I have a 15 month old girl and am very interested to know which crib mattress cover I should purchase. There are many on the market and I don’t want to buy one that might not be completely protecting her from the harmful toxins. Which do you recommend?

    I know this is an old episode so I hope this comment reaches you. I am super excited to say I have purchased an Intellibed! You have definitely inspired me to Sleep Smarter! Now, I wonder how can I upgrade my children’s sleep without spending a small fortune. I simply cannot afford to buy both my children Intellibed’s. As much as I know they need to “Sleep Smarter” than me, I was a decade overdue for a new mattress. I desperately want to upgrade their sleeping pads, but don’t have the funds to invest at this time. Can you recommend another, affordable, non-toxic upgrade I can consider for my children? Thanks in advance for your response. Love all that you do!

  6. Hi! I love your podcast. We’re due for a mattress change and as I’m into “rewilding”, many others have recommended getting rid of a conventional mattress all together. It took some getting used to but I’ve gone weeks and noticed quite an alleviation of back pain. Most of the explanation I’ve heard is that the structures (spine and neck bones and muscles) we’ve trained to support us while we’re sleeping on pillows or mattresses weaken and become sensitive to having those items. I’m also a huge fan of Katy Bowman, a biomechanist who advocates furniture free living. What’s your take on this? Go ahead, I trust you.

  8. I have a question. You talk about not having devices next to you when you sleep, which I’m on board with, but what if your device is in airplane mode? I like to use my iPhone to track sleep through Sleep Cycle, but I turn off bluetooth, wifi, and put it in airplane mode. Is it still a hazard?

    1. Great question, Brian. Being on airplane mode does help, but it’s still going to be kicking out electromagnetic noise that is definitely having an effect (even if it’s an extremely small one). This boils down to personal choice.
