TMHS 043: 8 Steps To A Healthy Pregnancy And Birthing Process

In this episode of The Model Health Show we’re discussing a topic that’s absolutely critical in our world today. Child birth and pregnancy has gradually been shifting out of the hands of women and their families, and more into the hands of conventional medicine. Many people are shocked to find out that the U.S. has the second worst ranking in the entire developed world for infant death rate. It’s time to put the power back in the hands of mothers to raise strong, healthy children, and it all begins with being informed.

To help talk about this topic today, I’ve brought on a special guest who inspires me everyday, my beautiful wife Anne Stevenson. She’s going to be sharing some incredible insights about having a healthy, safe pregnancy and child birth that you simply won’t hear anywhere else.

This is an amazing show in so many ways, and important for both women and men to hear. Whether you’re expecting a child, not having kids for many years, or giving birth is far in your past, this information is vital for you to share with the people you care about.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • Why the Joint Commission is cracking down on C-sections and interventions during birth.
  • How being born vaginally impacts the baby’s immune system.
  • Why your birthing process starts way before the day you give birth.
  • How exercise is helpful to a successful labor and child birth.
  • How to utilize exercise to improve the connection between mom and baby during pregnancy.
  • What affirmative techniques can be used to help mom with her mental and emotional wellness.
  • Why having supportive, knowledgeable people of natural child birth in your life is important.
  • What a home birth labor and delivery is like (this is a unique step-by-step example).
  • Why having more freedom to move around during labor is so significant.
  • How consciously eliminating stressors during labor can be helpful.
  • What the benefit of the birthing tub really is.
  • Why going “primal” was so helpful in this birthing process.
  • What the role of the father/partner is in the birthing process.
  • The shocking number of labors that are induced in the U.S. and their impact on C-section rates.
  • What the potential side effects of synthetic oxytocin are.
  • Why giving birth while lying on your back can be problematic for some women.
  • The 8 steps to a healthy pregnancy and birthing process.
  • How to handle family members and friends who are not supportive of your birthing decisions.
  • What critical things need to be considered in a birthing plan.
  • What some of the big nutrition do’s and don’ts are during pregnancy.

Shawn, Jade, and the best guest ever, Anne ;-)—-

Thank you for sharing your story of your birthing experience publicly. It really does bring awareness that a woman is an advocate of not only her voice, but her child’s, as well.

Society today can be caught up, and I hear this all of the time, in births taking place during a time that fits schedules, rather than happening naturally, as they should. This is a beautiful time, let it be just that.

Your story with Braden is not only inspiring, but shows tremendous strength and I’m positive that it will empower women listening to think and make the best decisions for herself and her family in this blessed process.

Shawn, I also found that many of your tips are not restricted to pregnancy and birthing, but can be a applied as a mandate in any aspect of life. Thank you for that.

Loved hearing your voice, Anne, in a different context as I usually do :-), and Shawn and Jade–as usual, grateful for your insight and edutainment.:)

I will definitely be sharing this podcast with some people I know who are doulas/mid wives.
    Love you all! ♥♥

Traci! Thanks for your lovely comment. I want women to get their power back when it comes to their birthing process. No one knows them better than themselves and its time to Trust that. That is so true regarding the tips used in everyday living. We get so disconnected with ourselves in everyday living and Shawn gave a quick and doable way of getting back in touch with our real strength and intuition.

      Loads of Love T!

    Dear Shawn, Jade and Ann,

    what a wonderful podcast!

Thank you so much for this very important information – and especially for sharing your personal stories, both Anne and Jade, which are so inspirational, encouraging, and touching – I can’t help but admire both of you!

And special thanks to Shawn – you always are such a GREAT inspiration. I love and follow your work and have read and listened to every single one of your articles, podcasts and youtube videos multiple times. Often times you came up with the new podcast exactly the moment when I was struggling with a certain challenge – for example, as I had severe migraines and was not able to even get up from my bed, I thought – let me just listen to Shawn’s new podcast… listening to you and Jade makes my life instantaneously better as your podcasts do not only provide a wealth of information, but also such a tremendous amount of positive energy, humor and inspiration. Interestingly enough, this particular podcast was devoted to migraine relief – and it did make me get up and try out your first couple of tips – and a few hours later I was dancing around my house having completely forgotten about the awful headache I was suffering from.

The current podcast is however a very special one. There is nothing more important than giving a new life. However, a lot of young women go through similar emotional challenges and fear as Anne did – and it is so important for the future mothers to hear that the pregnancy and birth process shall not necessarily be the one we are used to see in our society – 9 months full of torment followed by a hospitalization, c-section, antibiotics, pain and sleepless nights, but a wonderful journey, growing a new life inside of you, building up the mental connection with your child, and tremendous amount of happiness.

I was also very touched by Shawn sharing his experience becoming and being a father (I even cried a couple of times listening, so touching it was!) and I could only wish for every women that they are as lucky as Anne and have someone like Shawn by their side!

This podcast does make you WANT TO BECOME A MOTHER – even if you are still several years away from planning the pregnancy, as I am. It is never to early to start getting educated, getting acquainted with the process, collecting information and even making the plan well ahead of time – I am sure that it will spare a lot of complications, mental and physical challenges and make your motherhood a wonderful journey.

Thank you and warmest regards from Europe

Wow Ekaterina!! Thank you sooo much for the comment. I receive it with deep gratitude. I’m so happy that you captured exactly what I wanted to convey in the interview. I wanted to be able to show women another side of giving birth without the scares and beginning to trust their bodies even more. And Yesss I’m truly thankful for Shawn every single day, him trusting and believing in me. I hope that many more men when listening will capture that essence as well.

      Love and Gratitude,
      ~Anne

This episode brings the attention that Western Culture has lost touch with- natural delivery. The medical and emotional topics addressed here provides a helpful direction for women who are contemplating or confused about natural child birth to be more confident and courageous. Natural childbirth is a spiritual and emotional experience for everyone- even the newborn baby. It was beautiful to hear how mother transcended into “birth” itself. In a single second, we go from woman to mother. I commend you Anne for honoring your body, birth, and baby….and the most special B. =)
So much gratitude for the educators and facilitators who provide these compassionate and caring services for couple’s like you and Shawn to have such an amazing experience. Very proud of you two, Shawn and Anne, because what you did for your family, is guiding others to do with theirs with this podcast.
    Abundance of light and love!

    Hi!

I think that you guys are amazing! Jade – you make my heart smile, Shawn – your voice is like butter (or should i say coconut oil?!), and Anne – you are inspirational! I’ve just recently discovered this podcast, and I listen to about two podcasts per day. I have changed so many things in my life since the very first podcast, and I feel fantastic.

I appreciate the fact that you shared your pregnancy/birthing experience. It was such a positive story! I was wondering if there were any exercises that you could recommend to strengthen the muscles used during the delivery. I am not currently pregnant, but I am planning for it in the next year. Is there anything that I can start to strengthen now?

    Thanks!
